Manufacturers of mobile phones do not come off too well when you start looking at environmental issues.
Two examples of why.
One - we tend to buy a new phone and push the former in a drawer instead of forwarding it to a good cause. How many mobile phones alternative do you need?
Two - the materials used to manufacture mobile phones are difficult to enforce and can be harmful to the environment.
Nokia has decided to tackle the second of these in the form of the Evolve 3110. It is a remodeling of the 3110 and should not be confused with this revision of the 3110 Evolve with another 3110 incarnations you see there. If it does not have the word ‘Evolve’ in the name, this review does not apply.
As I write I can only find the 3110 Evolve to buy SIM free. It’s going to cost you £ 149 to the online store of Nokia, for example.
The eco-credentials of this phone can be summarized with the following elements: The body of the phone is created from more than 50 percent renewable materials. The packaging is low 60 percent by using recycled materials and is completely recyclable. The shipper minimizes his “no load” energy consumption. This means that if you forget to switch off your mobile phone when he is at full load, but it’s going to attract a minimum of energy.
Now, I do not think this is tremendous progress, to be honest. The Evolve 3110 still has a battery (a nightmare recycling), and the internal components usual, for example. And recyclable should be a legal obligation and not a pleasant surprise.
I do not see any notification that the guide is printed on recycled paper. Maybe, but if so, the fact is not trumpeted by Nokia. Text in the guide says it covers only “core functions” of the phone in order to reduce consumption of paper and said a comprehensive guide can be accessed online. (Just not print it!)

It is a candybar handset. It weighs 87g which makes it pleasant and light to the pocket, but it is a bit chunkier than many other candybars to 15.6mm thick. At 45.7mm width and height 108.5mm it is on an equal footing with other mobile phones candybar well, and it feels good in your hand.
Both pale grey, the sides and back are distinctive, and the battery cover and a game above the ring are ribbed to give a kind of corrugated cardboard.
The front fascia is black and shiny, and therefore resembles bog standard. It gives nothing away to the phone of eco leanings.
The numeric keypad is relatively large and I had no problem at all listening to shelve numbering several keys or texting. The same can be said for the two softmenu keys, keys Appeal and terminated and the navigation pad, all of which are large and easy to use. Each key gives a slight mechanical click when pressed, and you can feel a little too mechanical feedback. These factors contribute to the ease of use. The screen is disappointing. It is small, just 1.8 inches diagonally, and short on x 128 pixels with 160 of them being the screen. Without putting too much effort into it, you can see them individually. The TFT screen is rather than being the most friendly OLED battery - a shame since it would have contributed to environmental issues by giving you more battery life from a single charge.
Buttons are minimal side. There is a volume rocker on the right side and left on the infrared port. Remember those? Ideal for the transfer of data between two devices, they are relatively slow but easy to configure.
On the lower edge is a headset connector (2.5mm I am sad to report), Food adapter slot (one of Nokia’s mini looted types), device microphone, and a mini-USB connector for PC connectivity. There is no cable supplied, but chances are you already have one. Nokia PC Suite is not provided, either (no CD at all with this phone), but you can download and use it to synchronize content.
The 3110 runs Evolve S40 which means it does not have all the whiz-bang features of Nokia S60 smartphone handsets. However, I have already mentioned, you can synchronize with a PC, there is no more mobile email support and for those who are interested in Yahoo! Go is built in.
Communications capabilities are limited by the phone is tri-band GSM. However, web browsing Opera Mini is pre-installed. For all of the goodness of Opera Mini, I would say that the small screen and GSM only the ability to make this phone far from ideal for navigation.
Other software includes a voice recorder, an alarm clock, calendar, task list, application notes, a calculator, timer, and stopwatch.
There is an FM radio, and built in music player enjoys an equalizer effects and stereo widening. It is available in 32 MB of storage for all types of data and a microSD card slot under battery. My criticism has come with a sample size of 512 MB card, but you have not received a card with the phone in the retail sector.
Of course there is a camera. It is limited to 1.3 megapixels and lack of flash, autofocus and self-portrait mirror. But it has little effect on the hand but there is not much to write about the house. The camera is slow to save images so that if you use the three shot sequence mode candid photos can be out of the question. Oh, and there is a little shutter lag we should not expect to fully supervise or capture everything that is in motion that you photograph.

The flat color shot indoors under normal household lighting is a little dark, but the color reproduction is good. The President white shot outside is quite clear if a casual white and blue rose.
The cherry, just coming into bloom as the photo was taken, fares the worst and shows how the lens copes with complex lighting and a detailed subject. The focus is not huge, and the sky was far from the white light of the image suggests.
Finally, the cat was looking at the camera when I pressed the button to capture the shot, but when the phone did the deed, she had lost interest and turned back. As I said, shutter lag.
Verdict
So you are. The Evolve 3110 is a small step in the right direction as far as his environmental credentials are concerned. If you are tempted by the idea, for your money, you get a little mid-range mobile phones with surprising to write about on the home front features apart from a good battery life.
