I will not apologize for having had something of a Nokia-fest in recent weeks. With 8GB the N81 and N95 8GB the hot times appearing on each of the heels which can blame me? And now, the celebration continues Nokia, and not with another serial device N, but with a greater number of the Series E focused one. The E51, to be precise.
I was a big fan of the E65 cursor when it appeared, and though she had a few problems, I have Nokia wonder how it would top its next release. The E51 is the answer, and it really does look like a great smartphone for business users and consumers who want to stay on the roof of their lives.
This phone packs all its basic elements deceptively inside a box. The silver and black style of my review sample was not particularly exciting, but good enough. The delivery is reproduced in bronze and black or all black, but not all operators offering all variations.
The phone is quite up to 114.8mm, even if it is very thin to 12mm. It is 46mm in width and weighs 100g magic. It feels very comfortable to hold, and fits in almost any pocket without causing trouble. The height is perhaps excessive welcome, as it allows a superb screen, and many large bank pad buttons. Let’s look at these elements of presentation.
The two-inch screen measures quack and delivers 320 x 240 pixels. It can display 16 million colors. It is not enormous, but it is beautifully sharp and clear, and uses the confined space. To make even more use of the display area, the Nokia Web browser can be twisted into large format and there is a text in zoom mode that lets you see, as far as possible, one page at a time .
Number keys are all large and shaped so that if they affect all of each other as they also feel the buttons. I had no trouble calling the number or text quickly.
That’s extra buttons that draw attention, however. Silver surrounding the navigation key and its large central select button are no fewer than nine other buttons. Call and end, the two softkeys and Nokia Nokia Backspace key are accompanied by four “one-touch” keys.
Each of these three functions. The only marked with a calendar icon opens the calendar software if you type quickly. Hold it down and you jump directly into the creation of a new meeting. Tap twice and the first valve takes you to the calendar so you can view the current month, the second takes you to tap whatever application you already use.
There are similar functions for e-mail and key contacts. The fourth key marked with an icon of the house, takes you to the application menu with a short tap; return to the screen saver active with another tap, and if you hold it down, offers a selector applications so that you can move between open applications. All rather slick stuff, once you are accustomed to.
Turning to the hardware and software, the E51 is a quad-band GSM phone with 3G and HSDPA. It has no face-to-face camera for two-way video calls, which some might find a real pain. On the other hand, it is Wi-Fi and supports SIP means that your favorite software VoIP should work fine as long as its supporting platform Series 60 Nokia. Bluetooth is here too and it is in the infrared.
Under the hood of the software shares many others made to the nearest minute Nokia. It will play video and music, for example, handle mobile email and has a PDF reader, as well as readers for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. There is also an FM radio.
There is a generous 130MB of storage systems, and you can loose this up further with microSD cards. The connector is located under the battery cover, but not under the battery, so it is very easy to exchange cards.
A notable innovation on the front is a software Active Notes. It is an application that you can use to insert images, sounds, Internet addresses and simpler text-based in the notes. It’s a good idea, and could prove useful.
The headset connector is 2.5mm in size and rather boringly Nokia provides a simple helmet in one piece. Remember, it is primarily designed for mobile professionals and Nokia still does not realize that many professionals as a bit of music when they are out and about.
It is a shame that the battery life on the E51 is very good. I was thirteen and a half hours of music from a full battery charge. This is not quite the best I have ever received from a pay phone S60, but the E65, including ease of use as I liked, edged just less than ten hours.
However, it is the device which allows the phone. Its base of the 2.0-megapixel specification does not inspire confidence at the beginning, and it has been used on average.
Shooting pictures of anything even vaguely moving was a no-no. All my test images of moving subjects were vague and unsatisfactory. Both inside and outside the aircraft had problems. ” The flat color, photographed under normal light household looks grainy and bland. The flowers, photographed in the open air on a dull day in December, are overexposed and how they brilliant and vibrant yellow is completely lost.
Verdict
If you need two-way video calling, or a good camera on your mobile phone while the E51 is not for you. But in all other respects, I found it to be a great little notebook.
