Presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show 2008, for the first time is the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. Somewhere in the grey area between a “facelift” and an “all-car”, the LP560-4 replaces the current Gallardo when it is on sale in the spring. (At the time, Gallardo Superleggera will be removed, while the Gallardo Spyder will continue in its current form.)
The new car Lamborghini follows the name of tradition and is in a format similar to that of its big brother, the Murcielago LP640. Longitudinal mean Posteriore LP, the position of the engine - longitudinally mid-climb. 560 horsepower is its metric count, and Lamborghini has chosen to insert the “-4″ as a reminder that the Gallardo is a full-time four-wheel drive machine.
Our response, of course, is to assume that there will be a “LP560-2″ rear-wheel-drive model in the future. No matter how hard we tried, however, we could not get anyone Lamborghini (not even the engineers) to admit to this plan. Next time we will try to tickle torture.
Meanwhile, the LP560-4 of the arrangement is not different from the previous Gallardo, although the gaps and axles are revised for the weight savings. As before, the choice is a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic gear E-manual. The E-2009 gear is new, and it changes gears with a switch rotation instead of a forward / backward movement. This, according to Lamborghini, smoother gearchanges promises held 40% faster.
The 2009 edition of E-gear also has a new, more aggressive “Corsa” and a “Thrust Mode” - in other words Launch Control. Thrust into the method, the computer takes over, optimizing the launch and reorientation so that even your grandmother could lead to a second round of 3.7 to 62 mph. (This is 0.3 seconds faster than the car last year.) LP560-4 continues to beat the 2008 Gallardo with a half-second to 200 kph (124 mph), hitting that mark Only 11.8 seconds. And hard, the LP560-4 reach 202 mph (from a measly195 mph).
The animation responsible for making the Gallardo a real 200 mph supercar comes from a brand new engine - it’s a 90-degree, aluminum V-10, just like the old unit, but with larger bore spacing. It displaces 5.2 liters and, with the assistance of FSI direct injection, produces 560 metric horsepower at 8000 rpm - up from 520 in the 2008 model. The couple is also rising, from 376 lb.-ft. at 4250 rpm and 398 lb.-ft. at 6500 rpm, but do not let the tip high rpm go wrong - the new engine has more torque at low rpm than the old one. FSI provides a compression ratio much higher, instead of 12.5:1 to 11.0:1, and the new engine makes it more grunt everywhere in the range of engine operation.
Lamborghini is also proud of the LP560-4 for the improvement of the environment. It is not only faster than the car last year, it emits about 18% less carbon dioxide (327 g / km to 400). With this improvement comes a similar reduction of fuel consumption: the European combined cycle, the LP560-4 has a little more than 17 mpg - the car of last year guzzled fuel at a rate of 14 mpg.
At 3300 pounds, the LP560-4 weighs 20 kilograms (about 45 pounds) less than the Gallardo in 2008, despite the new car the most important engine. The difference is primarily due to the weight reduction strategies transmission, as the body LP560 is similar to the 2008 Gallardo. The wheelbase is unchanged, as are the width and height, but thanks to new front and rear fascias, the length was increased by nearly two inches.
The new front bumper that comes to a point in the center of the car, which looks like the front-end processing of the big brothers Gallardo, Murcielago and the Reventon. Larger air to improve the efficiency of the engine cooling, and a new aid to the hood LP560-4 meet pedestrian-crash-test standards. New flagship units are much shorter front to back and Y-shaped incorporate daytime running lights in their boxes.
The 2009 Gallardo LP560-4 also has a new rear. Its new taillights (each with three Y-shaped flux-capacitor-looking elements) to stop and finish on the horizontal plane at the rear. A single strip of black aluminum mesh under the taillights uses exhaust vent, absolutely superb and four chrome exhaust tips are incorporated in the rear diffuser.
Although the rear looks a bit clearer in the photographs, she - and in fact, the brand new car - is stunning in person. From the rear, the LP560-4 looks wider and lower. When viewed side by side with the old car, the outgoing Gallardo has begun to show its first wrinkles. After six years of production, it’s still a modern design - but the LP560-4 is even more so.
The LP560 suspension is completely revised. Similar to the 2008 model in the design, multilink front suspension mounts new features that allow easier adjustments. The rear suspension has an extra toe link and all new fixtures. Engineers have told us that the suspension changes result in a drastic reduction in NVH, with significantly improved ride quality and better handling.
The wheels are 8.5×19 front and rear 11×19 - and the three options are available wheel new: The Apollo is a wheel of silver, five double-rays; Cordelia is a polished, forged aluminum with a basket-weave pattern ; Callisto is a new glossy black split with five spokes. The wheels black Callisto look particularly impressive when mounted on a car with the new Lamborghini, optional matte-black paint.
Inside, the 2009 Gallardo new features gauges with a font similar to the one used in the Murcielago. The seven switches on the centre console has been redesigned for improved ease of use, and are now textured to appear as knurled aluminum.
Lamborghini has not yet released the official price for the new Gallardo. However, we have been fortunate to be at the plant to help build the first-ever production of 2009 Gallardo LP560-4.
