We were impressed by Toshiba’s first in the new jewel ‘of the series of LCDs back in November 2007. So, we took delivery of the new model 47in expect more of the same old, only bigger. Yet, for reasons that we will have a stab at explaining later, we did not find ourselves quite captivated this time.
Naturally, the rest 47Z3030 cuts fines as a drawing dash as his brothers and sisters smaller, thanks to its slender glasses and remarkably high gloss finish. Certainly, the sight of skinniness is not as striking as in the past because we have recently witnessed the arrival of Toshiba’s’ XF ‘Picture Frame models, with their 23mm bezels. But the fabric of 47Z3030 still makes those of most rivals 47in resemble proper fatboys.
Sport 47Z3030 also the same as connectivity 42Z3030. And you will find three HDMIs, all compatible with the impressive HDMI 1.3a standard for such things as potential lip-synch automatic color correction and depth of the system. We say this because the potential sources now commercially available that can exploit these HDMI 1.3 features are non-existent, so far as we are aware.
You also get a component video input, one D-Sub PC option, a subwoofer line-out (lest you are dissatisfied with the low levels of television its own speakers), and an exit optical digital audio to push through an AV receiver All digital audio tracks that you can receive via HDMIs.
Other key specifications making reading enjoyable are a native pixels full HD 1920 x 1080, and a beltingly - some would say ridiculously - claimed high contrast ratio of 15000:1.
Obviously, this figure is only achieved through a combination of a) a dynamic contrast arrangement that darkens the backlight to improve black levels when dark scenes are detected and b) that we suspect some are rather dubious techniques Measurement.
But while we may not approve any measurement system, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with the dynamic contrast arrangement, if it works quickly and subtly enough to make its brightness adjustable machinations distractingly obvious.
Another specification, we are pleased to place is reading the HD video 1080p/24 now the output format as a “pure” option in many HD disc players. In fact, the 47Z3030 goes further by including 1080p/24 with a system that quickly 5:5 pulldown image repeated every five times to reduce juddering objects commonly seen with 1080p/24 sources.
After being starved of 100Hz treatment to improve the clarity of the motion on the X and C models in the most recent Toshiba LCD range, it is a relief to find the system comes with the flagship model in the series Z.
The element 100Hz actually is part of a larger system of image processing called Active Vision M100 HD, with other elements, including treatment to improve colors, contrast levels, levels of brightness, noise and beautiful retailer.
As if all this were not enough, claims 47Z3030: 10-bit video processing to reduce, we hope, of bands of color where there should be smooth color mixtures, a dynamic curve characteristic that reduces Toshiba claims unhealthy extremes of black and white, while more natural shades, and MPEG noise reduction smoothing to divert a portion of blockiness that can happen in the standard def digital broadcasting.
Although the lion’s share of the 47Z3030’s clever bits are focused on improving image quality, Toshiba can not be accused of ignoring the TV’s audio. For all sports, in fact, a new technology developed by audiophile loudspeaker brand Onkyo believes that deliver excellent frequency response and the power of a small engine exceptionally array.
Plumbing, the Blu-ray transfer of Casino Royale in the 47Z3030 (this does not mean that we have fully depreciated HD DVD, honest!), The game originally dazzles just as impressive as the 42in version of the series.
Two features of the image in particular, stand out. First place is the color of reply. During the bright, color-rich sequences in

Such intensity of the color also allows the picture look exceptionally strong and deep, and, of course, as simply ensure that your gaze remains drawn to the screen like a moth to flame.
Other 47Z3030’s stand-out with our image quality HD is the source of its sharpness. Indeed, it is rare for a combination of this size to reproduce all nice details on a blank HD are quite accurate and that it does noiselessly Toshiba. This reinforces the sense of depth to the image, which reinforces the directness of your connection with it.
Small strengths, we also spotted in time mixtures of very subtle colors that seem almost devoid of any “striping” problems, and relatively little interference from motion blur thanks, no doubt, to the efforts by the system 100Hz.
Despite the formidable strengths, we found ourselves in difficulty unexpectedly by a couple of problems that, for whatever reason, does not seem quite as pronounced on the model Z 42in.
The first is that the seemingly eternal problem of LCD black level response. For the scenes the darkest of Casino Royale, such as the opening black and white images at night, have undeniably part of their influence reduced by mild weather on the darkest corners. Moreover, containing scenes in particular a striking contrast with the extreme brightness reveal casual “jumps” as the contrast dynamics of the system is not able to adapt quite subtle.
All this is especially strange, since the contrast ratio 47Z3030 the city is actually 50 percent higher than that of the 42in model. Go figure.
Our other problem with the 47Z3030 is that it’s not really amateur standard definition sources. Perhaps because of the very aggressive nature of its images in terms of brightness and color saturation, it tends to exaggerate rather than any noise perhaps inherent in a standard def source. And this noise is obviously very present in more standard def Freeview and Sky channels that we would like.
Whether it’s the image that we have flaws are talking about the most disturbing 47Z3030 that 42Z3030 because the screen size extra exaggerates them, or whether this is because the different 47Z3030 employs a panel with potentially different Basic characteristics of the image is not entirely clear. But the problems are certainly there.
He Onkyo design, in turn, contributes to this TV produce a sound very powerful. A good amount of bass is there to support the process (we doubt that you will find you rush to use the subwoofer line-out), the mid-range is only slightly compressed during the action scenes, and Acute own and help them deliver some sense of the width of the soundstage.
Verdict
47Z3030 Toshiba is a pretty nice large LCD TV, and is currently discounted at the cost of some very attractive. But either because of its size or its supplement use of a different kernel 42in panel to his brother, his image quality is not impress us as much as expected.
